15/ Seeing Past Damage

12th May 2022

Lesson 15: My thoughts are images that I have made. (ACIM, W-15)

This lesson is almost impossible to understand. It tells us that our thoughts produce images, and everything we look at is just an image in the mind. Real vision, in comparison to what the eyes see, is completely different. We learn that real vision is light. What our eyes see is ultimately darkness.

The point is that we should practice the lessons regardless of whether we believe them or not. If we knew the answers, we wouldn’t need the exercises. These lessons are here to re-educate the mind to see its full potential.

Forgiveness is equally obscure to a mind that does not see. A Course in Miracles tells us that a mind that does not see is a mind that sees with the ego. The ego sees forgiveness as an act of charity. Any damage we have received, whether physically or mentally, the ego sees as an act of assault. It deserves punishment. To forgive with the ego means we are forgiving the unforgiveable.

The unhealed cannot pardon. For they are the witnesses that pardon is unfair. They would retain the consequences of the guilt they overlook. Yet no one can forgive a sin that he believes is real. And what has consequences must be real, because what it has done is there to see. (ACIM, T-27.II.2:1-5)

A Course in Miracles tells us that forgiveness is not pity. ACIM reminds us that forgiveness is only real if it brings about a healing. The healing is brought about by knowing that what has happened are only images in the mind. They are not real. We simply made a mistake by thinking that they were.

A broken body shows the mind has not been healed. A miracle of healing proves that separation is without effect (ACIM, T-27.II.5:1-2). In other words, we see past the damage. We see through the ego. We see with the Holy Spirit. This is seeing clearly with a mind that is clear.

Cate Grieves’ third talk on The Obstacles to Peace (ACIM, T-19.IV) takes us a little further into the truth of who we are. It sheds more light on the darkness. The link for the talk is below.

16/ The Senseless Dream

13th May 2022

Lesson 16: I have no neutral thoughts. (ACIM, W-16)

This lesson tells us that every thought we have is important. Every thought we have is either true or false. Every thought we have either extends truth or contributes to illusion.

What is illusory contributes to the senseless dream. What is true relates to our reality. What we think therefore establishes our reality. We literally make our day as we go along.

If we wake up in the morning thinking our day is going to go badly, then this is what we will find. We can be certain that our thoughts will uncover this. If we wake up in the morning, and we feel uplifted and happy, our thoughts are creating a day that will be like that. Our thoughts create our reality and A Course in Miracles tells us that there is no way out of this.

Everything we look at, we put meaning on. Essentially, nothing can be neutral. Our thoughts dictate whether something is good or bad, with subtle variations on this. A Course in Miracles tells us we have a split mind. The part of our mind connected to the ego dreams of separation and stress; the part of our mind connected to the Holy Spirit knows the true nature and our reality, and of who we are. ACIM teaches us that our healing comes when we tune out of the ego and tune into Holy Spirit.

Correction is not your function. It belongs to One Who knows of fairness, not of guilt. If you assume correction’s role, you lose the function of forgiveness. No one can forgive until he learns correction is but to forgive, and never to accuse. (ACIM, T-27.II.10:1-4)

Our thoughts are essential to our healing.  A Course in Miracles tells us our healing comes through our relationship with people and things. If ACIM tells us our thoughts are not neutral, then it means we can have no neutral relationships. We either see with the thoughts of the ego, or we see with the thoughts of the Holy Spirit.  Both are in our minds. One shows us a senseless world, and one shows us a world that is both meaningful and real.

How just are miracles! For they bestow an equal gift of full deliverance from guilt upon your brother and yourself. Your healing saves him pain as well as you, and you are healed because you wished him well. (ACIM, T-27.II.7:1-3)

17/ An Empty Space

14th May 2022

Lesson 17: I see no neutral things. (ACIM, W-17)

A Course in Miracles tells us that power does not oppose. Nothing that we think or do can change one ounce of reality because God’s power has no opposite. As soon as we put our own interpretation on it, we miss it. Real power can’t be diluted. It is always there. We simply see past it. We see through it. We never know it for what it is.

The same principle occurs with people. We never see others for what they are. We see no neutral things.  We never see their power. We just see our own judgments superimposed onto them. It’s the same as when we see our reflection. We always see something that triggers a memory.  Something always opposes the power within us, no matter how hard we might try to make it real.

A Course in Miracles tells us that it is all or nothing. We either see the whole picture, or we see a bundle of mixed up thoughts that create a picture. We either see what is spirit, or we see what is solid and dense. We either see with the Holy Spirit, or we see with the ego.

As nothingness cannot be pictured, so there is no symbol for totality. Reality is ultimately known without a form, unpictured and unseen. Forgiveness is not yet a power known as wholly free of limits. Yet it sets no limits you have chosen to impose. (ACIM, T-27.III.5:1-4)

Forgiveness is what A Course in Miracles asks us to use in order to undo all the guilt we feel within. It allows the solid, dense form of the body to be replaced by a picture of purity. We swing from one side of neutrality to the other. We let go of judgements and allow ourselves to see what is.

Forgiveness creates the empty space. Here, things are neutral and can be filled with the power we haven’t seen. This has nothing to do with the ego. It has nothing to do self-inflated ideas or a limited sense of self. It has everything to do with a Self that is infinite. God’s power knows no limits.

An empty space that is not seen as filled, an unusual interval of time not seen as spent and fully occupied, becomes a silent invitation to the truth to enter, and to make itself at home. (ACIM, T-27.III.4:1)

18/ Quietness and Conflict

15th May 2022

Lesson 18: I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my seeing. (ACIM, W-18)

The lesson today is the first in which we learn that all minds are joined. There are no individual minds. There is just one mind, although we might believe there are multiple minds with multiple thought systems. A Course in Miracles is quite clear. Within this one mind, there are just two thought systems, and only one is real. So really, there is just one mind, one thought system, one God, one Son. This is ACIM’s whole message. There is just one of us, and nothing else.

The fact that there are seven billion of us seems a fact. There are seven billion people thinking seven billion different things. All have different needs and desires. Problems are manifest with eight billion different variations. A Course in Miracles sees through all of this. It tells us there is just one problem. We believe we are separate and alone.  We believe our busy minds can solve all of our problems. ACIM tells us this is simply not true. Busyness solves nothing. We are just creating more of the same.

In quietness are all things answered, and is every problem quietly resolved. In conflict there can be no answer and no resolution, for its purpose is to make no resolution possible, and to ensure no answer will be plain. (ACIM, T-27.IV.1:1-2)

We see a world in conflict. A Course in Miracles tells us that the world we see can never provide the solution. The world can never solve our problems. When we look to the world for a solution, we are simply seeking a solution from a web of illusions. There is no peace and joy in the world because the world itself is just a bundle of thoughts in our minds. The solution is always within us. It can be found nowhere else.

The solution is what A Course in Miracles terms the holy instant. This is where the mind becomes quiet. No conflict can be found in the holy instant because it is peace. Unexpected solutions to problems arise from the silence. Finding the holy instant arises from the practical application of the Workbook. We learn that, through silence, we can resolve problems; conflict only increases our problems. Training the mind to be quiet is the only solution. ACIM tells us that within the quietness is everything we will ever need.

The holy instant is the interval in which the mind is still enough to hear an answer that is not entailed within the question asked. It offers something new and different from the question. How could it be answered if it but repeats itself? (ACIM, T-27.IV.6:9-11)

19/ Letting Ourselves Be Healed

16th May 2022

Lesson 19: I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts. (ACIM, W-19)

The lesson today suggests that cause and effect are really simultaneous. Our thoughts are the cause of what we extend. With a split mind, there is always a limit to the love of the ego. With a healed mind, there is no limit to the love that the Holy Spirit can extend. The mind is our messenger. We either extend love, or we extend a limit on love.

A Course in Miracles tells us that, if we want to be healed, we are healed; if we want to attack, we are attacked. The decision arises within the mind, and the effect arises out of this one moment. In this one moment, we are either healed or we are separate.

The only ways to heal is to be healed. The miracle extends without your help, but you are needed that it can begin. Accept the miracle of healing, and it will go forth because of what it is. (ACIM, T-27.V.1:1-2)

No one is healed through double messages. If you wish only to be healed, you heal. Your single purpose makes this possible. But if you are afraid of healing, then it cannot come through you. (ACIM, T-27.V.2:4-7)

We have to be open to the miracle. A miracle is simply a change of perception. A Course in Miracles tells us it comes down to just one thing. We love without attack. ACIM tells us that, when we are fearful, we are not healed and cannot heal. The mind is too disjointed.  A mind that is healed sees no separation. The mind has let go of the ego. This just means that the mind has let go of attack. This mind can only love.

Our thoughts make us say and do things that have many different consequences. Our thoughts inevitably affect many different people in many different ways. Thinking with the Holy Spirit is just an extension of love. The love just permeates outwards. There are no barriers. In that one moment, we find ourselves limitless. We have let ourselves be healed.

In that one instant are you healed, and in that single instant is all healing done. What stands apart from you, when you accept the blessing that the holy instant brings? (ACIM, T-27.V.4:3-4)

20/ The Witness that We Are

17th May 2022

Lesson 20: I am determined to see. (ACIM, W-20)

Our determination to see means seeing past the body. A Course in Miracles tells us that the body is just a speck of dust when compared to the truth of what we are. Its importance lies in being purposeful. It is a medium of communication. The body is simply a tool of the mind.

This body, purposeless within itself, holds all your memories and all your hopes. You use its eyes to see, its ears to hear, and let it tell you what it is it feels. It does not know. It tells you but the names you gave to it to use, when you call forth the witnesses to its reality. (ACIM, T-27.VI.3:1-4)

We all want peace. We all want happiness in our lives. We all want to be free of pain. A Course in Miracles gives us the solution. ACIM is about freeing the mind from the control of the ego. The ego has, at its base, a huge amount of fear. The body submits to the control of the ego. ACIM tell us that nothing the ego thinks has any basis in truth. The ego is just a haze that smothers the truth.

When we awake in the morning, we might have a torrent of thoughts. When we really look at them, they don’t mean anything. They are just a torrent of nothingness. These thoughts shift and change, although each one might seem to be hugely important. But, ultimately, each thought disappears, and is then just replaced by another.

The same thing seems to happen with bodies. All over the world, bodies pass away and are born. It is just a constant cycle of birth and death. How the body is used becomes the memory. Sometimes the body is used in such a way that it can make a huge impact, and affect each one of us. The mind is the key. What the mind thinks, the body acts upon.

We are the witness to the way we think. A Course in Miracles tells us we have two thought systems, and we can only use one. The first thought system looks to constant distractions to hide its fear. The second thought system simply manifests out of joy and happiness. This is all it knows. It is one or the other, and our determination determines with which one we see.

Be you then witness to the miracle, and not the laws of sin. There is no need to suffer any more. But there is need that you be healed, because the suffering and sorrow of the world have made it deaf to its suffering and deliverance. (ACIM, T-27.VI.7:1-3)

21/ Escape from Punishment

18th May 2022

Lesson 21: I am determined to see things differently. (ACIM, W-21)

A Course in Miracles is all about seeing things differently - completely differently. We have to let go of all our preconceptions of what we think the world is. ACIM simply asks us to trust that there is another way. And this other way won’t be what we think it is.

Our suffering is compared to a dream of punishment. We are unaware that we are having this dream of pain. And, even if we don’t feel that our lives are painful, we might sense that there is always something out there that is trying to get us. The truth is we are dreaming. We are simply projecting images that sometimes make us happy, and sometimes make us terrified.

A Course in Miracles is all about waking up from the dream that we have made. It tells us that every problem that is out there has a cause that lies within, and every problem is really simple. We have forgotten who we are. We think we know but we don’t know. We think we are active, functioning human beings making a contribution to the world. We don’t realise that we are simply asleep, and that our dreams are all that is making the world.

The “reasoning” by which the world is made, on which it rests, by which it is maintained, is simply this: “You are the cause of what I do. Your presence justifies by wrath, and you exist and think apart from me. While you attack I must be innocent. And what I suffer from is your attack.” (ACIM, T-27.VII.3:1-4)

Our escape from punishment is the knowledge that this is so. The cause is always within us and has nothing to do with the effects of what we see. The freedom from our suffering lies within each one of us, and within each other. That is what the lesson means by seeing things differently.

A Course in Miracles is just a change of perception. What causes our suffering is not out there, but within us. As we sit and read this, we can rest assured it is a very simple choice. We can blame or we can accept.

Seek not another cause, nor look among the mighty legions of its witnesses for its undoing. They support its claim on your allegiance. What conceals the truth is not where you should look to find the truth. (ACIM, T-27.VII.6:6-8)

22/ Virtual Reality

19th May 2022

Lesson 22: What I see is a form of vengeance. (ACIM, W-22)

A Course in Miracles tells us that our thoughts create the world. The world exists only within our minds. If we are angry, we see an angry world; if we are peaceful, we see a peaceful world. Everything we think is reflected back to us. That is why this lesson says the world we see is a form of vengeance.

If this doesn’t make sense, we can be sure that what A Course in Miracles teaches us about the cause of this vengeance will also make no sense. ACIM tells us that the cause of everything that comes at us from the world is our guilt. We would never have guessed this. How could we? And yet ACIM tells us that this is how the world we see has come about.

Of all the many causes you perceived as bringing pain and suffering to you, your guilt was not among them. Nor did you in any way request them for yourself. This is how all illusions came about. (ACIM, T-27.VII.7:4-6)

Everything we see, we think is real. And yet, we have no idea of the part we play in making it seem real. As we live this life, A Course in Miracles tells us that we are dreaming. It tells us we need to waken from this dream. The dream is illusory. Only what exists outside of the illusory dream is real.

The world is full of opposites. To know peace, we have to have experienced pain. However, peace is always there if we want it. And yet we have to want it fully. For this, there can be no compromise.

There is a risk of thinking death is peace, because the world equates the body with the Self which God created. Yet a thing can never be its opposite. And death is opposite to peace, because it is the opposite of life. (ACIM, T-27.VII.10:2-4)

Cate Grieves’ fourth talk on the on The Obstacles to Peace (ACIM, T-19.IV) gives us a little more insight into the virtual reality that we confuse with life. It’s like a game we play, and sometimes we take this game very seriously. The link for the talk is below.

23/ The Dreaming of the World

20th May 2022

Lesson 23: I can escape from the world I see by giving up attack thoughts. (ACIM, W-23)

The purpose of the Workbook is to change our thinking. Every thought we think makes up some segment of the world we see. A Course in Miracles describes it as image making. If we give up attack thoughts, the images that we see will be completely different.

A Course in Miracles is all about getting to the cause of our suffering. This means taking responsibility for what we think. ACIM tells us our thoughts literally create our own heaven or hell. Heaven, in its purest form, is perfect oneness. Hell is anything outside that oneness.

The cause of our suffering is merely this. We had a thought that we could be separate from the infinite, unending love of God. This thought has nothing to do with seven billion separate wishes from the seven billion separate individuals on this planet. This is the one single thought that came into the mind of our collective Self. A Course in Miracles labels this one Self as the Son of God. It calls it the Christ. The Self is what we are. There is no differentiation in this one Self.

This one single thought now manifests itself in the dreaming of the world. We are all a part of the dream. Our guilt is what fuels it. Our thoughts are what project it. The solution is merely to acknowledge the cause which is within us. The cause is within the mind that thought the cause.

The world but demonstrates an ancient truth; you will believe that others do to you exactly what you think you did to them. But once deluded into blaming them you will not see the cause of what they do, because you want the guilt to rest on them. (ACIM, T-27.VIII.8:1-2)

A Course in Miracles tells us that the world depicts exactly what we thought we did. Everything we see arises from within us. All the horror, the pain, the suffering, it is all the effect of the guilt within us. And none of it is real. We are all just a part of the dreaming of the world.

The secret of salvation is but this: that you are doing this unto yourself. No matter what the form of the attack, this still is true. Whoever takes the role of enemy and of attacker, still is this the truth. Whatever seems to be the cause of any pain and suffering you feel, this is still true. For you would not react at all to figures in a dream you knew that you were dreaming. (ACIM, T-27.VIII.10:1-5)

24/ Undoing the Interference

21st May 2022

Lesson 24: I do not perceive my own best interests. (ACIM, W-24)

A Course in Miracles is very clear. We don’t know what is best for us. We may think we do, but we don’t. Our minds are made up by a whole list of past events that have absolutely no connection with what is happening now. Everything comes down to a choice between the past and the present, the ego and the Holy Spirit, between what is tumultuous and what is calm.

Remembering is as selective as perception, being its past tense. It is perception of the past as if it were occurring now, and still were there to see. Memory, like perception, is a skill made up by you to take the place of what God gave in your creation. (ACIM, T-28.I.2:5-7)

A Course in Miracles tells us we are trying to think things out with a mind that has been conditioned into thinking wrongly. The solution won’t come through a mind that is based on the false and the untrue. The solution does come through a mind that is connected to all that is truth.

The ego is a premise. It is made of false beliefs that appear to be true. The ego is shaped around our past; what we did becomes what we are now. What we need now is shaped by our past beliefs. The Holy Spirit is reality. It doesn’t see the past, but knows everything that we need right at this present moment. It might not be what we think we need, but the Holy Spirit sees the bigger picture. It knows that we are whole.

The miracle does nothing. All it does is to undo. And thus it cancels out the interference to what has been done. It does not add, but merely takes away. And what it takes away is long since gone, but being kept in memory appears to have immediate effects. (ACIM, T-28.I.1:1-5)

The memory that the Holy Spirit uses is therefore of our present state. It has absolutely nothing to do with past events. A Course in Miracles tells us that we have become too accustomed into believing that memory holds only what is past. We find it impossible to believe that memory can also hold only what is now.

The undoing of guilt is therefore the undoing of interference. It is the undoing of everything that prevents us from being in the present moment.  It is the difference between having a mind that thinks clearly,  and having a mind that that thinks with no clarity.

25/ A Distant Shore

22nd May 2022

Lesson 25: I do not know what anything is for. (ACIM, W-25)

This lesson tells us that everything that happens to us is for our own best interests. The problem is we just don’t know it. We think that everything that happens to us relates only to our little selves. This means that our big Self is lost beneath its weight. However, to know our big Self is what everything is for. We have just put a different meaning on it.

How instantly the memory of God arises in the mind that has no fear to keep the memory away! Its own remembering has gone. There is no past to keep the fearful image in the way of glad awakening to present peace. (ACIM, T-28.I.13:1-3)

A Course in Miracles asks us to remember nothing of what we were taught, simply because it tells us that we were badly taught. Our minds are now too full of stuff. We think all the time and it’s impossible to switch off. ACIM tell us that no solution can ever be found in a mind that is busy. All it does is distract.

The miracle comes quietly into the mind that stops an instant and is still. It reaches gently from that quiet time, and from the mind it healed in quiet then, to other minds to share its quietness. And they will join in doing nothing to prevent its radiant extension back into the Mind which caused all minds to be. (ACIM, T-28.I.11:1-3)

This Mind doesn’t think like we do now. This Mind is not full of clutter.  It has no sense of lack or of loss. It just knows of love for us. This means we are loved without condition. There is no limit to that love. It is limitless, despite everything we have made to be its opposite.

Wherever we are, whatever we are doing, it is like we are on a distant shore. We feel lost and alone. Our minds are on constant alert for any passing ship that might take us to safety. It is our deepest desire that it will appear. And every day that passes means that we have spent another day alone.

A Course in Miracles provides the help we need. ACIM tells us that only God can take the final step. However, ACIM also tells us our minds need to be quiet enough to let this happen. Then, when our minds do quieten, the distant shore them becomes our horizon. We know His Mind. Our minds are not alone.

26/ A Dream Is Like a Memory

23rd May 2022

Lesson 26: My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability. (ACIM, W-26)

A Course in Miracles is about contrast. It is about what is purely peaceful, and what is fragmented and insane. We are in the latter category, regardless of how we view our lives. Being purely peaceful comes when we are awakened. This is when we know the Infinite Love of God. We have no attack thoughts to counter this.

The lesson today tells us that our attack thoughts are self-fulfilling prophesies.  What we send out always comes back to us. An attack thought is anything that has judgement within it. An attack thought creates a threatening world. We project it out, and this is what we see. Attack thoughts leave us feeling vulnerable and deeply unsettled.

Nothing at all has happened but that you have put yourself to sleep, and dreamed a dream in which you were an alien to yourself, and but a part of someone else’s dream. The miracle does not awaken you, but merely shows you who the dreamer is. (ACIM, T-28.II.4:1-2)

A Course in Miracles tells us that we are dreaming. Our choice, then, relates only to the dream. This means we can have a happy dream or a sad dream, or we can simply wake ourselves up from the dream. ACIM tells us that a dream is like a memory, in that it pictures what we want to be shown. We always have a choice in any dream that we are having.

The dream is therefore an effect of what arises within our minds. This is the essence of everything that A Course in Miracles is teaching us. We are the cause of everything that happens to us. Everything arises out of what we think. ACIM tells us we are far too accepting of our random thoughts.  We feel like we have no control over them, and yet we do. We need to censor them.

An empty storehouse, with an open door, holds all your shreds of memories and dreams. Yet if you are the dreamer, you perceive this much at least: that you have caused the dream, and can accept another dream as well. (ACIM, T-28.II.5:1-2)

It is all about cause and effect. It is all about what comes out of the mind. We can make ourselves vulnerable or invulnerable, and what we think decides our fate.

27/ What Forgiveness Undoes

24th May 2022

Lesson 27: Above all else I want to see. (ACIM, W-27)

This lesson tells us that we might feel hesitant about wanting to ’see’, on the grounds that don’t actually know what ‘seeing’ means. How can we understand the formless when all we know is form?

This is the same as reading a page of the Text, then reading it again, and again, and still not getting it. We see only words and don’t understand the real meaning behind the words.

A Course in Miracles is a dilemma. Nothing feels more real than the wave of thoughts that greet us when we wake up in the morning. Nothing feels more real as we go about our daily business, or a drama that unfolds of which we are a part.

This world is causeless, as is every dream that anyone has dreamed within the world. No plans are possible, and no design exists that could be found and understood. What else could be expected from a thing that has no cause? (ACIM, T-28.II.6:1-3)

If the world is causeless, then we need to understand the world is just an effect. Since we are dreaming, then the world is just an effect of that dream. We are dreaming a dream that has no structure and that never was. It is not real. We cannot ‘see’ the dream for what it is.

The forgiveness that A Course in Miracles teaches us is the fundamental practice that undoes all the shadowy figures in the dream. We then slowly retrace our steps back to the beginning. The beginning was the cause. We have never left the beginning. It just feels like we have.

The separation started with the dream the Father was deprived of His Effects, and powerless to keep them since He was no longer their Creator. In the dream, the dreamer made himself. But what he made has turned against him, taking on the role of its creator, as the dreamer had. (ACIM, T-28.II.8:1-3)

Forgiveness undoes all of this. We come to know the true nature of who we are, and what God Is. This is not the churning thoughts that wake us up in the morning. This is not our everyday business, or a drama as it unfolds. It is something else. It is what we have to want to ‘see’.

28/ The Final Step

25th May 2022

Lesson 28: Above all else I want to see things differently. (ACIM, W-28)

The final step is really where we see things differently. It is where we are able to see everything without thoughts of the past. There are no historical attachments. We see things as they are.

A Course in Miracles tells us that the circle of creation has no end. Nothing is finite. Everything is infinite. We might wonder whether a circle of creation does have an end? We have created mental blocks about everything we see through our own minds. The purpose of the Workbook is to break down these mental blocks, and remove them one by one.

The responsibility is on us to accept that we are the authors of our own suffering. No one and nothing else is.  There is no God that damns us.  It is our minds that do that. Everything we see is seen within a mind that judges, and it is only the ego that judges. The only alternative is to see things with the the Holy Spirit.

The ego and the Holy Spirit are two completely different thought systems. Both go in opposing directions. This means that one separates and the other joins. Our joining is the final step, a time when we will know we have never been apart. In the meantime, we either go one way or we go the other. We either go towards love or we go away from love.

Thus is your healing everything the world requires, that it may be healed. It needs one lesson that has perfectly been learned. And then, when you forget it, will the world remind you gently of what you have been taught. (ACIM, T-27.V.7:1-3)

A Course in Miracles tells us that only the mind is sick. We need to put the emphasis back where it is needed. Allowing a mind to conjure up a world that is full of fear can only lead to more of the same. Disciplining the mind to see the world for what it is makes life more bearable. We see past our separate state to our unity. We see through our fear to our happiness. We see everything differently.

This world is full of miracles. They stand in shining silence next to every dream of pain and suffering, of sin and guilt. They are the dream’s alternative, the choice to be the dreamer, rather than deny the active role in making up the dream. (ACIM, T-28.II.12:1-3)
